First Lady Promotes Peace Corps
Language for Life hosted the event “How Language Learning and the Peace Corps Influenced my Life” which will took place Tuesday, October 20. Language for Life is a program of the Language Institute that gives current students the opportunity to meet with alumni who studied a foreign language and are using that language in their professional or personal lives in inspiring ways.
UW-Madison alumni First Lady Jessica Doyle and campus Peace Corps representative John Sheffy spoke on learning languages, serving in the Peace Corps, and about how those experiences led to lifelong passions and pursuits.
“You go to the Peace Corps thinking you’re going to help somebody and those very people end up helping you,” First Lady Jessica Doyle told a standing-room only audience of students. “Because of the language connections, the Peace Corps was transformational. It completely changed the way I see the world.”
This event was sponsored by the Language Institute, the African Studies Program, and Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS), with Language Institute funding from the College of Letters and Science Anonymous Fund.
