The 2009 July 22 solar total eclipse, with nearly 6 minutes available on the ground in China, is the longest one over a century. This is an excellent chance to hold asummer school just before the observation of the total eclipse in a city near the best observation sites. The school offers a chance for post-graduate students to have a global view of the solar-terrestrial research, as well as to vitness the splendid total eclipse. Moreover, the year 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy. This school can be regarded as an important part of the activities in the global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture.
